✔ Step 1: Apply for the provisional License.
✔ Step 2: Passing Driving Theory test.
✔ Step 3: Passing the Driving Practical test.

Step1: Apply for the provisional license

You need a valid Provisional Driving Licence before you go for a Theory or Practical test.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) application form (Form D1) can be obtained from your local Post Office but you can also apply online.

You can apply for your provisional licence up to 3 months before your 17th Birthday but it will not be valid until you actually turn 17 so you will not be able to take lessons on a public road, or take your theory test until then.

Eligibility for applying provisional driving licence:

✔ Should be a resident of Great Britain (UK).
✔ Meet the minimum age requirement.
✔ Meet the minimum eyesight requirement.
✔ You are currently not prevented from driving for any reason.
✔ Have a valid UK passport or another form of identity.
✔ Can provide addresses of where you have lived over the last three years.

As a photo is required for your licence the DVLA can use your passport photo if you have one. If you don’t have one, or you want to use a different one, this will need to be sent to the DVLA separately.

Step2: Book Theory Test

You are just one more step away from your UK license. The Step2 is you have to pass the theory test.

The theory test is made up of 2 parts - (1) Multiple choice questionnaire and (2) Hazard perception video test. You will need to pass both parts to get your certificate.

You can book your test online from the following link. Click here for your local theory test centre. Only once you have passed this can you apply to take your practical driving test.

Exam Part1 - Multiple Choice Questions
There will be 50 multiple questions and you need to get 43 marks to pass.

Exam Part 2 - Hazard Perception
Before you start the hazard perception part, you’ll be shown a short video clip about how it works. You’ll then be shown a series of 14 video clips on a computer screen. The clips: feature everyday road scenes contain at least one ‘developing hazard’ - but one of the clips will feature 2 ‘developing hazards’ The pass mark for cars and motorcycles is 44 out of 75.

Step3: Book Practical Test

You are just one step away from your UK license. Congratulations on passing the THEORY TEST. The Step3 is you have to pass the PRACTICAL test - the BIG DAY.

This will be a independent driving test where the examiner sits with you and you will be asked to follow the instructions.
